Tell about work- materials used, how you interpreted theme, what inspired you?
For my work I used an old children’s book and I painted it black. My artwork represents a person being transported into a different world of their favorite book. Everyone who loves to read would love to be transferred into the magical perfect world of Harry Potter, Twilight, or The Mortal Instruments. I personally love fantasy books because of the feelings of a different world, and the creativity behind this world and universe. This relates to identity because some people don’t feel comfortable in the world they live and they would love to just wake up and be in a different world where magic existed and they didn’t have to face their real problems. There are people who would love to be someone else for just a day to see what it feels like. I know whenever I read a book, like Harry Potter, I always think how cool it would be if I could be a wizard and attend Hogwarts, but you always come back to reality in the end. When you read you become attached to the characters like their your own friends, and you feel what they feel; laughter, happiness, sadness. Being someone who has grown up loving to read I felt this piece really connected to me and it can to others as well, because who hasn’t wished to go to a different world?
What do you want people to notice in your work?
I want people to notice how it looks like someone’s legs are coming out of the book and there are “fireworks” all around. This person jumped head first into the book and they were actually able to be transformed to the world in the book. Reading isn’t a weird or nerdy thing, it is actually something that can be a lot of fun and make you think about a lot of things, if you sit down and try to like a book.
How successful is your artwork? Explain.
I think my work is okay for the most part, but there are definitely things that could be fixed and improved. The legs were really hard to make look real/good, so I think that is definitely something that I struggled with. I also had trouble with coming up with an idea to make the whole “entrance” look fun and magical. Overall, I am not sure I was able to get my point across but at the end of the day I think someone could tell that it was legs and a book and they could come up with their own story or interpretation of the identity they feel portrays to them.
